Parents want to replace the Wrangler with... a fucking 7 seater. They're thinking of the new Pathfinder or 4Runner. We have a Forester right now too. I hate this.
4WD is a must. I want them to consider a 2014 (current gen, not the new ugly one) Tahoe.

Sell them to the circus.

4Runner's third row is pretty worthless. For something with a usable third row seat they either need a larger 3-row crossover or full-size truck-based SUV.
Unless they're going to be doing some serious towing, off-roading, or you frequently get 8+ inches of snow at a time, I'd lean more towards crossover.
The Pathfinder has become somewhat of a mommy mobile but it just might be right up your folks' alley. If it interests them, then they might as well also look at the Pilot, Highlander, Explorer, and 3-row Santa Fe as well. None are particularly interesting, but competent awd family haulers.
Traverse/Acadia/Enclave triplets are getting a little long in the tooth but could be investigated. Well, maybe just pick one of the three to check out.
Maybe a Durango is worth checking out? It's basically a long wheelbase Grand Cherokee. Actually it's probably what I would go for if I were in this market segment, since I'm in Wisconsin and we get deep snow here I'd take it over the more car-based crossovers, but not quite so massive like a Tahoe/Expedition/Sequoia/Armada.

Q7 is pushing it in terms of affordability...
RR is too expensive and don't trust LR4

I wouldn't trust LR4 either. It gets 4 MPG. Maybe Certified Pre Owned Q7?

Yeah they don't need an off-roader beast but definitely 4WD cause we get decent amount of snow (sometimes 1' or more every couple years). Weather wise, the Forester and Wrangler have handled everything but we've had issues with some AWD-based crossovers like my uncle's Pilot and the XC90 we used to have a while ago. I really don't think we even need 7 seats... they're just being silly.

A lot of that comes down to tires, since full on truck tires can tend to be better in the snow than some of the tires that come on crossovers.
I would push them towards the Durango.

I'd get a 4runner. Still great off road, still good on road, had third row "seats" and if you get the SR5 edition it's a pretty good looking vehicle.

My parents want to buy a seven seat crossover soon. I'm in college, and my only brother will follow suit in a couple of years.
Why?
Also, I recently explained to my mom what gears are. She can drive a stickshift. Parents, man.

Get a nice used FJ80 land Crusier, has the jump seats in the back to get 7 in. I'd have mine over a Wrangler any day.

A few year old Z71 Tahoe FTW.
Also, I love that video. The rare Peyton obscenity.
